ATM Robberies Reach Historic High
A recent report shared details on the surge of automatic teller machine (ATM) robberies in recent years with numbers surpassing historic highs. According to the FBI Bank Crime Statistics report, ATM thefts jumped more than 700% from 2019 to 2020, and then again 10% in 2021.
3SI, a Malvern-based company that does security for ATMs, saw a 148% increase in ATM robberies and fraud on a global scale from 2019 to 2020. According to their calculations, as of August 2022, the number of ATM thefts was already 165% greater than 2019.
Criminals also are targeting technicians doing maintenance on ATMs, sometimes with tragic results. In July 2021, an armored carrier employee who was servicing a drive-through ATM was shot and killed in New Orleans. In May 2022, two gunmen shot and killed a technician who was loading cash into an ATM in Houston. A robbery of an ATM technician in Nashville got attention because one of the perpetrators released a video on YouTube that bragged about the theft.
