Consumer Product Injuries Continue to Rise
Consumer product injuries are on the rise again, according to an article in Insurance Journal. After a temporary dip during the pandemic, injuries increased 6.8% in 2021 and another 7.8% in 2022. That’s no surprise for those who follow our Recall Roll Call reports each month. Many common household products – from bedding to soap -- are presumed to be safe, but they may not be.
In 2022, there were 12.7 million people treated in ERs for consumer product related injuries:
- Stairs, ramps, landings, and floors contributed to 2.9 million injuries
- Beds, pillows, and mattresses came in second at 906,000 injuries
- Chairs, sofas, and sofa beds caused 597,000 injuries
For children ages 0-4, the top products were:
- Soaps and detergents: 13,171 injuries
- Televisions and stands: 6,388 injuries, and
- Cooking ranges and ovens: 8,305 injuries
It is worth noting that the CPSC reported data from emergency department visits only. The numbers could be higher for additional injuries that were treated at urgent care, in a doctor’s office, or even at home.
Some injuries are due to human error or a simple accident. However, when product instructions are not included or are incorrect – or worse, when the product itself malfunctions, life-changing injuries and tragedies can occur.
