Six Million Vehicles Still on the Road with This Recalled Defect
The largest automotive recall in U.S. history is not quite done. One hundred million Takata airbag inflators were recalled worldwide more than two decades ago. But a recent warning from Nissan alerted drivers that 6.2 million vehicles on the road today still have potentially deadly Takata air bags.
These bags have faulty inflators that can explode with excessive force, causing metal fragments to spew violently at the driver and passengers. To date, 27 people have been killed and more than 400 have been injured by these air bags. Automakers have reached out with letters, emails, and phone calls but have not been able to reach everyone to offer the repair, which is free under federal law.
Nissan noted that it has 84,000 vehicles on the road with the recalled air bags, with some models as old as the 2002 model year. They and other automakers are asking the public to immediately stop driving the vehicles and get the repair.
