The Best and Worst of PA Hospitals
The latest hospital safety survey is out, revealing years of safety progress reversed by the pandemic, according to an article in the Pennsylvania Patch. The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit health care watchdog group, rated almost 3,000 U.S. hospitals on more than 30 measures of patient safety, and many fell short.
The Fall 2022 Hospital Safety Grades report showed that staffing shortages have taken their toll, and that over 200,000 people still die each year from hospital errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. An estimated 1 out of every 25 patients contracts an infection in the hospital. The report also revealed that the number of patients treated for healthcare-related infections reverted to pre-pandemic levels.
Pennsylvania’s hospitals had grades ranging from A to C: 39 hospitals ranked as A, 30 as B, and 14 as C. However, in the prior spring report, 8 Pennsylvania hospitals were given a D grade.
