Top Roadway Recalls of 2024
In the span of just a few weeks this fall alone, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalled 141,000 vehicles, including Acura, Ford and Toyota models for various safety issues. Every day that consumers used these vehicles, they put themselves at risk.
Recalls are nothing new, and NHTSA maintains a comprehensive database. So, what were the top recalls of 2024? A recent Data Hub analysis examined data from the top 12 vehicle manufacturers, and found that General Motors led with 1,663 recalls, followed by Ford with 1,506, and Chrysler with 1,419.
- General Motors’ recalls were related to hydraulic brake issues, followed by problems with steering, seat belts, and the fuel system.
- Ford’s primary concerns involved the fuel system and powertrain, along with hydraulic brakes and the electrical system.
- Chrysler experienced similar issues with its hydraulic brakes, powertrain, and electrical system.
Common problems with hydraulic brakes included brake fluid leaks that could lead to brake failure and an increased risk of crashes. In some cases, there were no low brake fluid warning lights, and in others, unexpected ABS activation caused a loss of brake pressure. Additionally, electrical shorts in the brake pressure switch raised the risk of circuits overheating and causing potential fires while driving or parked. Steering failures, such as broken bolts or tie rod failures, were also flagged, along with seatbelt malfunctions that could fail to protect occupants in a crash. Powertrain problems were noted for causing a complete loss of drive power.
NHTSA encourages consumers to report any concerns that may indicate a vehicle defect. This feedback can help prompt a safety recall. Submissions can be made at NHTSA’s website.
